Obesity negatively impacts a child's life in many ways:

  • Increased illnesses including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, asthma, joint problems, fatty liver disease, and gallstones (CDC, 2011).
  • Lower self-esteem than average weight children (CDC, 2011).
  • They are more likely to be teased at school (Neighmond, 2010)
  • They may miss more school. (Schumacher & Queen, 2007).
  • Poor quality food consumption slows cognitive growth (Schumacher & Queen).
  • They are less likely to go on to college (Neighmond, 2010).

An obese or overweight child often grows up to be an obese adult.Often the medical problems experienced in childhood become more harmful. An adult who is chronically overweight is 50% more likely to be unemployed. Obesity impacts a person's ability to succeed (Neighmond, 2010).
